Barnsley Gardens

We took Wood's mom to see Barnsley Gardens on Friday. It was built in the late 1800's by a wealthy cotton purveyor as a cool refreshing spread away from Savannah. Since we are about 5 hours from Savannah, I'd say they really wanted their distance. Now it is a really fancy resort with golfing, horseback riding and fancy restaurants. Normally the gardens are gorgeous and we saw great promise for a beautiful spring but right now they were in their winter slumber. So we toured the ruins of the house.

Nutcracker at the Fox 2006

Last night Wood and his mom and I went to see the Nutcracker Ballet at the Fox theater - we also saw it there in 2004. Before the show started we were entertained by the Fabulous Fox theater organ player all decked out in a sparkly silver jacket -( I snuck a picture...well me and about 200 other people)
As you can sort of tell he plays this HUGE pipe organ with more bells and whistles than you can shake a stick at. I would love to hear a Bach concert on this gem. Anyway that part is always great fun and definitely worth arriving early. The first half of the Nutcracker was a little bit of a snooze. It is a two hour production with a 20 minute intermission. All the really familiar songs are in the second half and it seems like the first half is just a long setting of the stage for her dream when all the good stuff happens. Although there is giant pig being chased by a butcher (for the families Christmas dinner) and the rat king part in the first half- I was thinking this might be a little scary in this version, but I guess it was just me, cause the little kids around me were laughing when he died- it was quite melodramatic. Wow, I have not seen such excellent dancing- the lifts and the twirls and the leg extensions and gee I don't know what you call it all, but I was on the edge of my seat. It was really quite thrilling! The costumes were gorgeous. Oh- Wood and I also joined a gym yesterday. We checked a couple out and then decided... this one has great equipment, better hours and is cheaper. We start Jan 2.

Feeling fine Frog

Anne and Mark gave us Feeling Fine Frog to help keep an eye on things.... I think he is laying down on the job
Right now he has a couple of friends helping out to make sure the pansies don't get out of line.

Pettit Creek Farms

Ooh how I wish I had taken pictures of this place. Last year we looked for Christmas trees here, decided they were a little too pricey and then regretted later that we didn't take the plunge and get one. So this year we drove over Monday afternoon to get a tree. Ok, this is just a Christmas tree lot on the side and really an animal rescue place for real. It is in Cartersville and they have who knows how many acres where they keep their rescued buffalo (0r are they bison- they have 2 now), camels (dromedary's- the one hump kind... they have about 5), the tallest pig I have ever seen, various goats, emus, ostriches, chickens, ducks (they may have arrived on their own though- when we drove by the little pond on the way out, they were all butt up under water eating- now that was quite a sight), reindeer, lambs, peacocks and the requisite dogs and cats. Not really sure if it is a rescue place or not, but they do collect a weird variety of animals and then make sure they are well taken care of. They have a hay ride thing at halloween and then they 'decorate' for Christmas and give car 'tours' through the property. It is all very down home and relaxed and fun. I made a fast friend in Duke, the black Great Dane, while we were picking out our tree. He is 5'9" when he stands up on his back legs, but he just loved melding in too my body (you know how a big dog just kind of leans and leans into you until you have to lean back or you will be knocked over) while I scratched his head and face. I love this place! maybe we will drive back so i can take pictures to post. Oh and Sarah, Stone Mtn is about an hour away.

Stone Mountain 3- the evening entertainment

I'm not sure who is telling whom "I told you so" in this picture but you know it is one of them! The 3 Confederate heroes chiseled on the rock (Lee, Jackson and Jeff Davis- no not our relative :-) ) We stayed in the freezing weather to see the Christmas lights, a show and a somewhat disappointing parade, but left before the fireworks (my decision). Thankfully Bry and Kim had leant Wood and me jackets and a scarf because it was freezing to death! Notice the almost full moon in the sky.

Stone Mountain 2

We had fun exploring the top Atlanta from the rock! Oh well you can't really see it from this photo but Wood is pointing to Red Top Mountain out there in the distance Atlanta through the pine trees. I guess pine trees really are the weeds of Georgia, but I still like them :-) A view on the way down in the gondola

Stone Mountain

We went to Stone Mountain with Bry and Kim yesterday to see the rock and the Christmas sights. We believe it is the largest outcropping of granite east of the Mississippi (outdone by Half Dome in Yosemite) Kim and Wood were really good sports about going to the top. I think they loved it once they got there. View from the gondola on the way up At the peak!

Lots of laughs

Although not the best picture of the lot, this one certainly did capture Bob, Brandon and Sheri having lots of fun before he left for his permanent station in the Army in Colorado. Posted by Picasa

Welcome home sunset

I can't tell you how glad I am to be home from our trip out west. Wood got a twinkle back in his eye as soon as we landed in Atlanta. Our house welcomed us home and even the sky put on her best colors to remind us of the glorious sunsets that await us here. Trouble

Ok... I have been complaining about no one blogging and have been reprimanded for not doing so myself. There really hasn't been much going on extraordinary, EXCEPT that I have actually been able to sleep in my own bed for the last 3 weeks! Hurrah. Getting caught up on much needed sleep that is for sure. This weekend Wood and I watched The Five People You Meet in Heaven and then we watched 12 Angry Men (the original version). Both movies are thinking movies and we enjoyed them both. 12 Angry Men is one of my favorites, I guess because it examines assumptions, prejudice, and the need to think critically. The play version is coming to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta with Richard Thomas (John Boy-... Bryan couldn't remember that we ever watched the Walton's .... do any of the rest of you kids remember?) Yesterday I found a moth that thought he could hide in our guest bathroom and blend in. Look he is half hiding behind the picture.I hope you all have a wonderful thanksgiving!

Sue and Ron's visit to Japan

I thought maybe the easiest way to show you the picture Wood and I liked best, Sue, would be to blog it. Looks like you had a very memorable and culturally different from ours visit to Japan.

Honeymoon remembered

Can't believe it has been a whole month since Wood and I got married. We decided to celebrate our honeymoon in our favorite place, the North Georgia mountains. We rented a cabin with gorgeous views and from where we could hike on the Appalachian trail and rent horses close by.
The view from the "only covered portion of the Appalachian trail :-)
Vogel State Park
Anne and Mark at Amicaloa falls below
And a special treat, when we returned home and went for a walk at Red Top Mountain we were greeted with a great foggy cold morning and gorgeous views of fog on the lake and leaves changing colors.

Barbara and the terrible, horrible, no good very bad day

Okee doke .... after a perfectly wonderful visit with the Budds ("Wait for me, parents" my favorite parting Ellen quote) I landed in Atlanta only to find that there was a funny clicking in my car. I opened and shut the door an additional time (for a reason known only to the deep recesses of my brain) and the clicking went away. Turned the key and ....you got it ... nothing. Luckily I had lots of options.... I could call Saturn roadside assistance, or AAA or voila how about the guy in the yellow security jacket riding around the parking lot on a Segway. I flagged him down (he was having a very important conversation with another parking lot guard which must have been very important indeed, since he didn't seem immediately inclined to zip toward my waving arms until I walked within 10 feet of him- after which time he was very helpful) Anyway he called the free airport 'we will jump your car dude' and after an hour he showed up and gave me a jump.... so about an hour after I landed I was on my way home. Just as I turned into my driveway, I hear the ding ding ding of the you are seriously close to being out of gas noise. I knew it was going to hit, but was afraid to stop because I wasn't sure the car would start again. That was a good decision because once I got into the garage and turned the car off, I tried restarting it and tada!!!! nothing.... Ok... so about 7:15 am this morning I call the Saturn dealership to warn them that my car is coming in... even though they open at 7 am they were still on their message machine mode so I left a message. I then called Saturn roadside assistance and they hooked me up with a company to come tow my car for free to the Saturn dealer in Marietta.... about 30 minutes away. Ok.... so about an hour later I get a call back from Saturn roadside asking if the towing company had contacted me yet.... nope.... hmmm... let me call them again.... okay about 20 minutes later I get a call from the towing dude, gave him directions and he told me he was about 20 minutes away. Hmmm.... about 40 minutes later.... Saturn calls again to see if they have arrived. I say no... she calls them again.... 10 minutes later the very nice and competent towing dudes show up... tow truck at the bottom of the driveway. So the plan is to push the car out the garage and then let it coast down the drive way. He has me back it out the driveway and then put the brake on. Lucky for all of us he took it down the drive way and lucky for him he was good at it and even though he was going pretty fast by the time he got to the bottom he was able to turn it out which took it up hill a little and then we pushed it up to the truck and then pulled it on to the platform. Then he tells me they really haven't had a chance to grab breakfast yet so they were going to do so before they took my car to the Saturn Dealer. WHAT!!!!!!! I think.... but don't say anything. Ok, so about 11:30 I haven't heard from the Saturn dealer so I call them to make sure they received my car. Noooope they say not here. Yikes and cowabunga.... have these guys gone to Florida or Tennessee with my car!!!!!!! I call Saturn Roadside and punch through a bunch of buttons before I finally get to the message " We will now connect you to a live agent" WHAT!!!! as opposed to dead????? but at least it gave me a chuckle. So she calls the tow dudes and they are really on the road and on the way to the Saturn dealer. They arrive with the car at 12:30!!!! Yes I complained to Saturn roadside... but I am not sure if she understood my comment about hiring people that work on Hawaiian time. Ok so my car is at the Saturn dealer and I ask them if they have shuttle service. "Yes ma'am we do" Great ! I say I live in Cartersville. He says, " it is only good for 45 miles" I say wonderful I am within 45 miles. "No, ma'am , I said 4 to 5 miles" . So now I wait for Wood to come home tomorrow so I can go get my car. Hmmmph. By the way it was a battery and although I have a 5 year extended warranty, it doesn't cover the battery, so they replaced mine for $165 dollars. Yikes that is one expensive battery!!!!! Ok so that wasn't all for the day. My computer wouldn't hit the internet... so after about an hour of randomly getting some websites but not others, I come downstairs and reset the router. Ok... now it works better, but I have conference calls up the yazooo all morning and stuff that I thought I could work on during the con calls, but it turns out I actually had to pay attention (imagine that) so couldn't work on the stuff with deadlines looming over my head like a huge dark cloud with ping pong size balls of hail. Okay so I have to go through citrix to access some of our sites on the intranet to complete some forms that were due today. Very very slow and tedious process of cutting and pasting from the cool word document that I actually did the work in to the very old and slooooooooow form that I have to submit. I go to print the doc and zounds all I can hit are network printers in Atlanta or DC.... not my wonderful trusty printer that is two feet away from me. So I decide I will print to a file and then save it where I can get to it off line.... sneaky me.... but it didn't work and I tried every way possible. Finally I copied the doc from its very silly and slowwwwwwww web form into a word doc and although it didn't look exactly the way it was supposed to I printed it out and was able to sign it and then await the fax number from my boss so I could send it in. Next , after a document review where I had difficulty communicating why it needed to be simplified and bulleted so folks could see quickly what was in this 3 page document, one of 5 or 6 we have peppered them with in the last several days, I had another con call and then decided to tackle our new travel system so I could complete a voucher and get paid for the trip that is already charged to my credit card from 2 weeks ago. One hour and a half later I completed a document that usually takes about 10 minutes to do. And I even went to the training for this new system..... 2 months ago.... okay so my 'short' term memory is bad :-). There is a 239 page online doc that tells how to use the new system though, so I decided I better download it and actually read the section that would help me not charge the government for money I didn't spend. Good thinking on my part, I'd say. To end on a positive note. ... this evening I went for a delightful walk in my neighborhood. The leaves are starting to change colors, weather was gorgeous, there is a huge full moon out tonight... and I think I only picked up one new mosquito bite on my walk :-)

October Portland Visit

Wood and I bought Isaiah and Ellen some sunglasses and they actually are wearing them!Ellen on her favorite pink Fred Meyer horse. We went to the zoo on Monday and they had these great simulation of toys that the orangutans like to play on. Before the zoo we went to the doctors. The kids were real troopers. The only time Isaiah cried was when we had to leave and he couldn't hide in one of the cupboards anymore.

The Servant

I finally finished reading another book for my class and I think this one succinctly sums up, in an entertaining and easy to read manner, what all the other business books that I have read so far are trying to say. To effectively lead you must: 1. Build relationships 2. Focus on the customer not the CEO/management 3. Lead with authority/influence, not power 4. Meet the needs of those you lead (needs not wants) 5. Action vs feeling - Love those you work with and although not a huge point of the book, but mentioned...., get the right people on the team.

Home

Having lived in several different locations and visited lots, I am beginning to understand what is home for me. I must say first off that who is with me at home can make it or break it and Wood definitely makes it. That being said... I love the country.... I love sitting out on my deck and watching humming bird battles, turkey vultures soaring over the lake and hills and just being able to see distance. I love the afternoon thunderstorms, the hills turning orange and red in the fall and the gorgeous green of spring. I love living a 5 minute drive from a state park with lots of hiking trails and a vast and inviting lake. I love the slower pace and that people actually look each other in the eye and listen to each other.

morning

Here are a couple of views of my favorite statue of the weekend

Weekend 1 in DC

Visited with Anne and Mark on Saturday and as always had a wonderful time. Their front yard is looking especially wonderful since they landscaped. We went out to Chili's for lunch and then to see "The Devil wears Prada" Anne and I both liked it and Mark said he liked the beginning ;-). All I have to say is if my first week of work here last week was as bad as 'the new Emily' I think I would have told them all where to go. Some seriously nasty women, for sure. Sunday I visited the Hirschhorn Museum and the ground floor of the National Art Gallery. I especially love Rodin's work and they both had lots. So all in all I was quite thrilled. Some of my favorite work was in the National Art Gallery which isn't really a part of the Smithsonian. I took lots of pictures of one particular statue. Going to see if they actually came out tonight and then will post if one of them did. All in all a great weekend, if not still a little hot. But then so is everyone.

Bugs and such

Wood has been the fortunate one to spot most of the interesting bugs around the house. He has seen luna moths twice and this little fellow was sitting on the hood of his truck Saturday morning. Me , the lover of bugs, never spots a one, but Wood the not so lover of bugs seems to see them all the time I took him out to a more comfortable spot in the pinestraw by some bushes Wood was also fortunate enough to pick up this fine hitchhiker on our trip up to Chicago last week. He felt something crawling on his arm after a brief stop in Kentucky (which is most gorgeous). Wood wanted it off and I wanted him to hold still while I grabbed a picture. We compromised with him in a pocket of the door and then I took him outside on our map. I believe it is a Hebrew moth, although I would have named it a Dalmatian moth. Notice the blue up by his head and on his legs. Very very cool.

Staying cool

For some reason, put rocks from the drive way into water filled buckets was at least an hour's worth of entertainment.... well ok maybe not a whole hour but it could have been. So easy to please ;-) Notice the drops of water on Isaiah's neck and how wet his shirt is. The boy LOVES water. Dave squirted him with the hose a few times while he was in the pool and he just laughed. Dave would squirt his belly and he would just get a big grin on his face. Even inadvertent squirts in the face would just bring a brief moment of astonishment followed by a huge grin Ah the cheapo miracle pool. We were all just sweltering. Everyone got in except .... Me... notice the black chair and kleenexes next to it in the background. I set up the where the hose connected to a different hose and was squirting a little to give me a nice and constant cool mist on my legs. And with the kleenex box close by I was well prepared for those nasty allergy sneezes (I went through all of Sarah and Dave's kleenex and started on at least one new box) Such a contented little guy. He sure loves his big sister. Anything Ellen does or has, Isaiah wants to copy. Such fun watching him bonk heads with Dave and walk around the house in Ellen's new princess high heels all in the same hour. When we heard it was going to be a record breaking 101 degrees we quick ran to my FAVORITE Fred Meyer store and got a cheapo pool to hang out in. Watering the yard was also a favorite, as was a squirt bottle armed with cold water for those no airconditioning in the car rides
